Not only is there a  difference in power consumption between the analog and

digital mode, the phones adjust their transmitter output power "on the fly"

depending on how strong a signal is being received at the cell base site.

When the phone is transmitting to a close base it uses .6 watts RF output,

when it transmits to a  more distant base it uses 3.0 watts or 5 times the

power.
