Legionella & Radiation

Dear RADsavers,

A collegue involved in industrial radiation safety aske me to post the

following on RADsafe. You may send your replies directly to him.

QUOTE

At the company Corus Staal in IJmuiden Holland, a company which produces

about 6.5 million tons of steel, there are kilometers of cooling-water tubes

in which are, unfortunately sometimes some colonies of legionella-bacteria.

To diminish or even better to get rid of those bacteria in these

cooling-water tubes, irradiation with ultraviolet non-ionising radiation

and/or addition of chlorine in the systems did not have the desired result.

As local radiation engineer I wonder or investigations are being done or

publications or being made to get rid of these bacteria by using a

radioactive source (e.g. Co-60) against the outerwall of the tube(s). At

this moment I am just interested in the technical (im)possibilities of this

method and for the time being not in for example justification, legislation

and social acceptation.

Thank you beforehand for your reactions.

Kind Regards,

Jaap Th. van Nes (e-mail address: jaap.van-nes@corusgroup.com)
