JOB DUTIES:
Performs evaluations and inspections of the production, use, release,
disposal and/or presence of ionizing radiation from radioactive
materials. Evaluates license applications to assure that the
applications meet Bureau license requirements for public health and
safety. Performs license reviews and inspections to all license types
including non-medical applications, facilities for equipment
calibration/leak testing service, waste handling, transportation
inspections and other licenses/inspections as assigned. Measures levels
of radiation, concentrations of radioactive material present, collects
samples for radiological analysis, examines devices, equipment,
materials, facilities, records and/or reports and verifies compliance
with applicable rules and/or standards. Records inspection data
obtained by performing tests, observation and interviews. Communicates
with and responds to inquiries from medical and/or industrial personnel
and/or residents of areas where radiological survey work is being
performed. Writes reports regarding the results of facilities evaluated,
inspected and/or licenses reviewed in accordance with applicable Ohio
Revised Code and Ohio Administrative Code. Makes recommendations to
supervisor based on the outcome of reported information.
Employs a wide range of radiation survey instrumentation for detection
of alpha, beta, gamma and neutron radiation. Maintains records of
equipment use, calibration and maintenance. Uses personal computer and
data base software to enter data regarding facilities evaluated and
licenses reviewed. Participates with federal, state and local agencies
in responding to radiation emergencies or exercises. Makes
presentations to professional organizations, government entities and
public groups regarding nuclear safety issues. Responds to inquiries
from and provides technical advice to practitioners, scientists,
officials of private and government organizations, state and federal
emergency response personnel and the general public as requested.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
12 months experience as Health Physicist 1, 84641, within same work
unit in which vacancy exists (e.g., X-ray Control Unit, Nuclear Safety
Unit, Radioactive Materials Unit); must be able to provide own
transportation. OR 12 months work experience in radiation, radioactive
materials or radiological health and safety; must be able to provide own
transportation and one of the following: completion of undergraduate
core program in health physics or radiological sciences; OR completion
of undergraduate core program in engineering, physical sciences or life
sciences; 1 course or 3 months experience in basic calculus; 3 courses
or 9 months experience in radiation theory, interaction of radiation
with matter or biological effects of radiation; 2 courses or 6 months
experience in physics and/or chemistry. OR completion of undergraduate
degree in unrelated field of study; 24 additional months of work
experience in radiation, radioactive materials or radiological health
and safety.
NOTE: Requires travel; exposed to low levels of radiation; may be
exposed to hazardous levels of radiation. The final applicant selected
for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis prior to
appointment to test for illegal drug use. An applicant with a positive
drug test result will not be offered employment.
