Only 6 or 7 of them were firefighters. The others were reactor operators, 

electricians, and engineers who were on shift at the time. The firefighters 

who died were all members of the first crew to arrive. They were on the 

roof for several hours, from a few minutes after the explosion until about 

dawn. Most of the activity is short lived, so the first to arrive were 

exposed to the highest dose rates.
