Mike, the discriminator was set to be above the Tl-208 gamma ray at 2.6 MeV.  Actually it was set at about 3 MeV to avoid all terrestial gammas. The Bi-214 is at 1.76 MeV as I recall.  Don't hold me to the 10-20%.  That was a long time ago and I no longer have the paper.  There was a diurnal effect, however.  I got an A on the paper.
