RE: Radium on Luminous Dial Watches



The table on page 67 of "Living With Radiation: The First Hundred Years"

indicates typical Ra-226 activity for watches as 0.1 uCi and the 10CFR30

limit as 3 uCi. Page 81 shows a watchmakers assortment of replacement radium

hands containing a total of 0.7 uCi. There are probably 200 hands in the kit

but I could get the exact count if you are interested. In addition to the

hands, the watch might have radium dots or fully painted numerals. As an

autoradiograph on p. 81 shows, the amount of paint varies considerably among

brands.
