That may not be true under some restricted circumstances.  If you are using MS Outlook and are using MS Word as your email editor and have not set MS Word to provide maximum protection against Word macro viruses, I believe you may be at risk opening messages that contain macro viruses.  If you fall into this class, you probably ought to check some of the anti-virus web sites to ascertain your exposure.

As I understand, there is no problem in opening the email message---
as long as you do not open any attachments.

Just an additional note:

If I don't recognize the sender of an email, I delete the email without opening it.  Re the latest virus: the title "photos from my party" put me off, so I didn't open it.  So far, this kind of "personal filtering" has worked for me.
