RE: dose limits for members of the public
Sounds like you're validating what JM says about killing the golden goose.
What does it have to do w/ science, ethics, or the public health? I believe
in hormesis, but I'm required to enforce ALARA, so I do. Vigilantly. If I'm
still around when science and regulations are in sync, I'll be happy to
enforce the new regulations, especially since even more expertise would be
required to operate safely w/ higher levels for DOE and NPP work. I'm afraid
you're right about the likelihood of reduced staffing for general industry
and academic settings, though. Not necessarily for medical--their staffing
could increase to allow vaccinal exposures to a better informed public. Not
that a lot of people might bother to become informed. Men are 40 percent
less likely to have heart disease if they give blood four times a year, but
how many do?

Hi Chris,
My point is, if we allow up to 5 rem (50 mSv/year) for workers and the
public, what need
will there be for a rad protection staff? Consider that currently, it is a
rare situation
where an occupational worker not only never exceeds this threshold, but
rarely
approaches it. The only instances I've observed are for physician who
conduct
interventional procedures, and they often use dose weighting factors to
determine the
EDE. So, if nobody approaches the 5 rem, why would any management agree to
maintain a rad protection staff of any size > 1? Also consider that with
lower dose limits,
most staffs continue to be cut by management.
Regards,
