Re: Krypton-85

Jerry,
It is my understanding that both plants are releasing Kr-85 to the atmosphere.  I have found a report prepared for the European Parliament (Directorate General for Research, Scientific and Technical Options Assessment) that shows that in 1999 the discharges from Sellafield were about 1e17 Bq, and for La Hague were about 5e17 Bq (obtained from graphs on pages 35 and 57).  The report was prepared by WISE-Paris and generated some controversy.  As such the report is clearly indicated as a draft report for the consideration of the European Parliament and should not be regarded as the views of the parliament.  However it should be noted that the values given in the report for Kr-85 for both plants were simply obtained from reports produced by the operators themselves.

If you wish I could send you (or anyone who is interested) a copy of the report directly, although you should note that it is a pdf document that is just over 1Mb in size.

Subject: Krypton-85

At the operating fuel reprocessing plants in Europe, are they retaining & storing noble gases such as
Kr-85, or releasing them to the atmosphere?  Could anyone provide information on this? Thank you.
