Shark Attack in California

February 27, 2002

Davis, CA

Anti-nuclear extremists are attacking the framework of sound radiation

safety practice in California and attempting to shutdown or disrupt nuclear

power activities, nuclear technology, and radioactive waste disposal

activities via the introduction of three legislative bills now under

consideration. These are California Senate Bill 1623 introduced by Romero,

California Senate Bill 2065 introduced by Kuehl, and California Assembly

Bill 2214 introduced by Keeley. The Assembly Bill 2214 would prohibit the

disposal of radioactive waste in California (a frontal attack on the

Southwestern Low-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Compact) and prohibit

forever the opening of the State's licensed LLRW disposal site at Ward

Valley, CA (the safety of which is not in doubt but which has been stalled

by political maneuvers for over 8 years).

You can read these Bills in PDF format at

Although these Bills display a warped view of radiation risks and a total

misunderstanding of radiation safety practice, they have obviously been

carefully crafted to look like safety and environmental improvements. In

fact, they are based on the extremist anti-nuclear view that all radiation

work and especially nuclear power are evil (except, of course, medical

studies which they judiciously imply are only done with safe, short-lived

radionuclides).

Posing as "environmentalists" the supporters and framers of these bill may

unfortunately have significant influence on the current liberal legislature

and our anti-nuclear Governor Gray Davis.

It is important that radiation safety experts in California review these

Bills and contact Assembly and Senate representatives about them as soon as

possibly to provide personal professional opinions about their contents and

need. Also, you might be willing to inquire about public legislative

hearings and speak at them. Those supporting these Bills are represented by

dedicated and experienced anti-nuclear advocates who will work vigorously

to try to get passage of these Bills.
