RE: Disposal of Smoke Detectors

I recently purchased some smoke detectors. The disposal instructions say

you can either throw them in your trash or return them to the manufacturer

at your own expense. In my experience, DOE sites tend to prefer disposal of

similar items as low level radioactive waste.

Subject: Disposal of Smoke Detectors

We have 100 non-working smoke detectors that contain Am-241 sources. Anyone

know the proper disposal method?

Thanks,
