Re: Criticality accident
The Los Alamos report is well known to the criticality safety community.
Based on this report is a graph you can see at
http://www.nea.fr/download/nsc/CritAcc.gif. This shows the frequency of
criticality accidents per year and their cumulative number for the 56
years. 90% of these accidents occurred in the first 28 years, and 10% in
the last 28 years.
A few further figures:
a) Number of accidents in research reactors and critical assemblies in
national labs: 38
14 persons irradiated + 12 casualties
USA: 26
Russia (ex-USSR): 6
Canada: 2
Argentina, Belgium, France, Yugoslavia: 1
b) Accidents in fuel cycle installations: 22
~46 persons irradiated + 8 casualties
Russia (ex-USSR): 13
USA: 7
Japan, UK: 1
Total: 60 accidents, ~60 persons irradiated + 20 casualties
