NRC Commissioners Approved a Final Rule On Skin Dose Limits

Posted on Powernet:

--NRC COMMISSIONERS APPROVED A FINAL RULE REVISING THE AGENCY'S

radiation dose limits to the skin yesterday. The final rule would

establish a more risk-informed limit for doses received from "hot

particles" by having the dose to the skin averaged over the most

highly exposed 10 square centimeters instead of being averaged over 1

square centimeter. The change would allow the use of less protective

clothing and allow workers to complete jobs in radiation areas more

quickly, NRC says. This would actually make such work safer, the

agency said, by reducing the chances of heat stress from wearing heavy

protective clothing and by reducing whole-body radiation doses by

cutting the time spent in radiation areas.
