RE: Comments on the West Wing episode

Maybe even a more obvious example is the amounts being paid to advertise

within the movie/TV show, e.g., where the star is shown drinking Coke

instead of "something in a glass."

Exactly right. What people see on TV certainly has an influence on what

they think, how they behave, and what they buy. The folks on Madison Avenue

spend billions of dollars on 30-second spots for the explicit purpose of

influencing the behavior of the viewers. Therefore, whenever a TV executive

says a 60-minute program has no effect on behavior, you may be sure he is

deliberately lying.

the entertainment industry squawked - "it's only a movie, it's just

entertainment, it can't actually affect anyone's behavior". But of course

they know very well that emotional stories can affect people, their choices,

their behavior, their votes, and they gleefully exploit this and then run

for cover when something bad happens.
