Waste Characterization Question
Here at the West Valley Demonstration Project the Waste Management Group uses RadMan to Characterize drums and boxes. This has worked well for waste streams that have activity spread (RELATIVELY) throughout the package. When the contents of the container are mainly surface contaminated items, especially heavy items such as steel, RadMan does not perform as well. Radiological Engineering assists using MicroShield to determine activity on the waste in the container.
I was asked to bench mark this to see how others address the same issue. I am interested in all opinions on how it is done here and on ideas of other ways to complete this.
NOTE: The waste streams are sampled for Isotopic ratios and hazardous materials.
