The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is seeking
an outstanding individual to serve as Chief of the Health-Related Energy
Research Branch (HERB), Division of Surveillance, Hazard Evaluations, and
Field Studies (DSHEFS), National Institute for Occupational Safety and
Health (NIOSH).
HERB plans, conducts, and directs analytical epidemiologic studies and
retrospective exposure assessments among current and former workers at
Department of Energy and other energy-related facilities. HERB is staffed
with approximately 25 scientists, research fellows, and support staff. The
annual operating budget is approximately $4 million.
The Chief, HERB, is a senior leadership position serving as a principal
advisor to the Director of DSHEFS and other program officials at NIOSH. The
Chief is responsible for the management of intramural and extramural
research programs, for the effective application of research resources for
hypothesis-based studies of occupational exposures and worker health, for
second-level supervision of epidemiologists, health physicists, industrial
hygienists and support staff, and for provision of expert advice, within
his/her area of expertise to HERB scientists and outside parties, on
potential health effects of occupational exposure to ionizing radiation and
other physical, chemical and biological agents. The Chief interacts with
other Federal agency and research organization officials concerning joint
and collaborative approaches to program development.
A competitive benefits package is offered, including: health and life

sick and holiday leave; and moving/relocation expenses. Starting salary is
dependent upon qualifications and experience, and ranges from $92,564 to
$120,336. The position is located in Cincinnati, OH, a diverse metropolitan
community with many cultural, educational and recreational resources,
including major-league sports, a world-class symphony orchestra, ballet,
live theater, natural history and art museums, beautiful parks, and a
temperate climate.
