RE: Rad Sources for Workshops
If you look on ebay you can usually find LOTS of radium watch hands. I
just took a look, 61 for $7.00 - but price will probably end up ~$
20.00. There's also uranium doped marbles - but not as hot. Use "radium"
as search term.
I've got a working radium dial watch I got from ebay to use for (non
work-related) demos, but have stayed away from something like watch hands
since I figured some regulator with nothing better to do could give me
trouble at some time since they're not really part of a consumer product.
I found that Wal-Mart sells the radioactive lantern mantles for $0.99 each
- the non-radioactive Coleman mantles were like $2.50. They make great
sources.
I don't believe it's legal to take the source out of a smoke detector -
part of the general license requirements.
No-salt's OK for sensitive detectors, but not for dose instruments.
Fiesta ware can be fairly inexpensive - ebay again, or even antique stores
- I've gotten (salad sized) plates for as little as 3 dollars.
(Obviously) My personal opinions
