Yucca Nuclear Waste

June 26, 2002

To the Editor:

Re "How Secure Is a Nuclear Waste Truck?" (Op-Ed, June 19):

Jim Hall answers his own question with the kind of scare

tactics that have clouded the debate over the proposed

national nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain in

Nevada.

In reality, we can safely move nuclear waste around the

country because that's exactly what we have been doing for

decades.

Mr. Hall not only doesn't acknowledge this safety record,

but he also does not disclose that he is a paid consultant

lobbying for the State of Nevada.

We cannot afford our current strategy of leaving nuclear

waste scattered at sites around the country. Now, more than

ever, we need a central, secure facility where we can

concentrate all of our resources on keeping our nuclear

waste safe.
