RE: Job Posting Announcements
Bill:
how right you are. But it can be worse.
A few days ago Gilles Montavon (montavon@subatech.in2p3.fr) published on
ABBE's (Jean-Charles.Abbe@IRCCYN.EC-NANTES.FR) e-mailer (RADCH-L) an ad
offering (for a postdoc) 1850 EU/month, for 11 months, to do 'research' in
Nantes: complete text below as proof - enjoy the English.
That is just about $20K.
Of course, the idea for any really smart scientist would be that this way
one can learn the ropes from such luminaries as Montavon (an expert in
Eu/humics interactions) and maybe ABBE The Censor Himself.
Than one could even go on to Orsay, where as far as I know Solange Hubert
(shubert@ipno.in2p3.fr) and coworkers are still looking for someone to do
their work for them (as they had posted here on November 19, 2001).
It seems, BTW, that this lab did manage to send young people to the US to
learn, but for some reason they don't come back...
More seriously, having grinded my ax... shortage is widely claimed for
radiochemists and nuclear chemists in Europe. In the US IMHO the money is
fairly good, if you are a citizen and can get security clearance (pot
smokers need not apply); maybe that can still motivate bright native sons to
work hard and for peanuts for a while. But in (most of) Europe the cash is
lousy for normal university professors (really smart ones find ways, don't
they?), just about reasonable in the JRC's and the CEA (but look at where
they send you!)... and there is hardly any other place to work at that
recruits competitively. Not the situation that attracts bright and
enthusiastic minds.
Done.

Please tell me you're joking: $31 - 38K/yr!!!
If HPS thinks that the shortage of HP students is due to a lack of funding
for
academic programs, this may give them a clue to look elsewhere.
The opinions expressed are strictly mine.
It's not about dose, it's about trust.
Curies forever.
Show me the money.

Project
In France, clay geological formations have been selected as potential sites
to store the nuclear waste. Organic-mineral colloids present in these
formations are potential vectors of migration of the radionuclides, in
particular if the organic matter becomes oxidized. The goal of this work is
to study the sorption of radionuclides on colloids extracted from sediments
coming from the East of France. This project is associated to a program
financed by the French National Research Center.
The objectives of the work are
1. To develop a method allowing to extract the colloids from the sediment.
2. To characterize the colloidal fraction either physically (size) or
chemically (functional groups – FTIR ; electrospray Mass Spectoscopy (ES-MS)
; elementary composition - ICPMS, MEB, MET). The goal of the
characterization is to understand the association between the organic matter
on the mineral surface and the effect of oxidation on the association.
3. To study the sorption properties of oxidized and non-oxidized
organic-mineral colloids for Eu(III) and Ni(II). The work will be to measure
the isotherms and to study the reversibility of the adsorption.
Financial support
The grant is for a period of 11months. The salary is 1850 euros/months (once
the taxes removed).
