RE: Potassium cell study
Philippe,
Thanks for the information, but I am really interested in the potassium cell
study legend. It is so often quoted, but lacks substance.

John,
John,
Not on K-deprivation experiments, but still on the effects of
deprivation of radiation:
Do a search on "Planel H" on MEDLINE. This will bring you 84 references
on the effects of lack of radiation on simple organisms (cells and
parameciaes) and mice. Most demonstrate a detriment in organisms
exposed at levels below background and optimum benefits at 4 - 10 times
background dose rates, that is, close to annual limits for radiation
workers.
Recent work (Courtade-Saidi M., PhD thesis : Les effets d'une
irradiation gamma chronique à très faible dose sur la souris - Effects
of very low dose chronic gamma irradiation in mice - , Univ. of
Toulouse, France, 2001) shows a reduced risk of cancer and
cardiovascular diseases in exposed mice, at 11.5 cGy/y (35 times
background vs 0.35 cG/y for controls).
I can e-mail you the "Planel" list I got from MEDLINE if you want to
know.

Ah, yes. The grand conspiracy. I knew Charlie, and had a lot of
respect
for him. However, this is still hearsay evidence. What I am asking is,
is
there any documentation of such an experiment? This is the same as
saying
there is a carburetor that allows a car to get 75 miles to a gallon of
gas
(4 liters to our international readers) Says who? There is a story that
years ago the Navy located all the members of the original Nautilus
crew,
because another story was going around that they had all died from
radiation. (Story of a story?) It seems to me that the government
would
have published this report since in the 1950's and 1960's was
encouraging
the use of nuclear power.
Again, where is the proof of the potassium cell study?
By the way, I could not find the subcommittee report at the NRC Web
Site. I
tried using the ADAMS, but that leaves much to be desired. Could you
provide me the link so I can read it myself.

In the part you cut out of the quote, personal knowledge of Charlie
Willis,
CHP, NRC senior staff; go to NRC web site, transcript, March 1996, Joint
Subcommittee of ACRS/ACNW. You also cut out the part about "...because
of
the LNT, this data was not published."
