Radiation from an A-bomb

With a GM, it would depend on the distance.  Much more than a "couple of feet" (a scientific term - pretty close to 2/3 of a meter), I imagine that a detector containing a GM-type probe would be pretty worthless (as would be an Ion Chamber).  However if you were standing there with a scintillation probe (detector) - either high or low energy, you'd DEFINITELY see some "activity" from "some further distance" than the GM...

Of course I'm sitting here figuring that we're talking about a suitcase-type bomb with essentially no cladding/shielding (i.e. all "business", no fancy stuff)...

Does anyone have measurements of gamma and neutron fields associated with an (unexploded) A-bomb?
 
Will your average Geiger counter detect a "suitcase bomb"? What should be used to detect one?
