Re/ HEU in Yugoslavia

John,

Do you know when did it come to Yugoslavia and

why was it never used?

Was it a problem of an enviromental ussue or

result the political chaose during the break up.

45 kilogramms = 45,000 gramms / 6,000 = 7.5

gramms per a uranium fuel rod -???

It is more like a fuel tablet.

I am assuming it was already over there during

the NATO's bombing campaign and we all,

certainly, very glad that it was not accidentally

mis-bombed or misplaced.

Emil.

Subject: HEU in Yugoslavia,Several people have

discussed the Russian

recovery of fuel from Yugoslavia. Below is a

clip from

the IAEA news that describes this as fresh fuel.

Under heavy guard and security precautions,

Russia reclaimed possession from Yugoslavia last

week

of 6,000 rods of fresh, highly enriched uranium,

known as HEU. The shipment weighed only 45

kilograms but comprised enough nuclear fuel to

make two

nuclear bombs -- with some to spare...Melissa

Fleming, a spokesperson for the Vienna-based

International Atomic Energy Agency, said the IAEA

had

been keeping its eyes on the Vinca fuel for

years,

with inspectors making monthly visits.
