Re: Radioactive Boy Scout (was RE: talk to journos) (Thanks!)
Thanks for posting this link. I had heard about this, but never had read
the details.
I wonder how David Hahn is doing now.
It would be interesting if someone did a follow-up article.
Weren't there some journalists lurking on this list at one time?

The Nov. 1998 Harper's Magazine article about David Hahn, the "Radioactive
Boy Scout" can be seen at
http://www.findarticles.com/cf_0/m1111/n1782_v297/21281407/print.jhtml
According to the article David worked to generate neutrons from his
americium and radium sources with a beryllium target so that he could
fission some uranium.
The 1998 article noted that Eagle Scout David eventually joined the Navy
and was a seaman about the nuclear-powered aricraft carrier, the USS
Enterprise. David refused to undergo tests to determine whether he had
become contaminated from his expierments with radioactive materials. The
article quotes David: "I wanted to make a scratch in life. I've still got
time. I don't believe I took more than five years off of my life."
