HP Vacancy at NIST
The National Institute of Standards and Technology, Occupational Health and
Safety Division, Health Physics Group, NIST MS3542 Gaithersburg MD 20899.
NIST has an opening for a Health Physicist (Payband ZP1306-IV) for daily
supervision of the Laboratory Health Physics Group (LHPG). The group
includes two technicians, two professional HPs and one supervisor
(currently vacant). The group is responsible for radiation safety and
regulatory compliance for a broad scope materials license, and a variety of
ionizing and non-ionizing radiation producing machines, assuring compliance
with the SNM and distribution licenses, NRC, OSHA, DOT, IATA, and EPA
regulations. The machines include accelerators up to 32 MeV, a synchrotron
UV light source, x-ray machines, and electron microscopes, lasers, and
microwaves. The group performs radiation safety training, dosimetry,
bioassays, RAM inventory control for sealed and unsealed sources with
isotopes ranging from H-3 to Am-241, shipping and receiving, effluent and
environmental monitoring, lab instrument QC, contamination monitor and
survey instrument calibrations, lab surveys, and other license support
duties. The primary customers of the LHPG are the scientists of the NIST
Physics Laboratory. The Physics Laboratory provides primary instrument
calibration services for neutron, alpha, beta, x-ray, and gamma
measurements. It provides primary isotope standards for distribution to
secondary labs. The laboratory uses accelerators, high dose gamma cells,
and radiochemical processes for fundamental research on materials
properties.
The applicant must possess skill in working with a diverse group of
scientists, technicians, and support staff, and in building teams and
consensus. The supervisor shall serve as a HP technical expert (CHP or
equivalent experience is desirable) and will be responsible for daily
management of the group. This will include training, assignment of duties,
and oversight of results. The supervisor shall manage performance plans and
evaluations. The supervisor shall participate in facility surveys and
program audits, and cover staff duties as required. The position requires
radiation safety committee interaction, policy recommendations, and review,
modification and approval of procedures. The incumbent shall participate
with operational health physics research presentations and publications.
