GENERAL INFORMATION
The Sixth Congress on Radiation Protection and Safety (an IRPA Regional
Congress) will be held in Lima, Peru from 9 - 13 November 2003. The Congress
will be organized by the Peruvian Radioprotection Society (SPR) with the
collaboration of Peruvian Institute of Nuclear Energy and Radiological
Protection Societies from Latin American and Caribean (FRALC), España and
Portugal (GRIAPRA).
The main purpose of this conference is to bring together professionals from
industry, medicine, universities, research laboratories and regulatory
authorities to present and discuss the latest research results, and to
review the state of the art related to applied and fundamental aspects of
Safety and Radiation Protection.
THE VENUE
Centuries before it was founded as the City of Kings, the territory of
Lima, capital of Peru, was habited by civilizations that had gauged its
wealth and strategic location. Proof of that can be seen in the countless
"huacas" or temples that dotted the valley, particularly the Pachacamac
shrine, a major pilgrimage center during the Inca empire. This spurred
Spanish Conqueror Francisco Pizarro in 1535 to choose the Rímac River Valley
to found the capital, as its location by the sea provided a link with
sailing routes.
Lima is the main gateway to Peru, a major city bustling with living history
and movement. It is an ethnic melting pot, featuring pre-Hispanic, colonial
and modern elements. The metropolis is also surrounded by every aspect of
Nature: the sea, islands, mountains, desert and plantlife. Its various
quarters feature an active nightlife and well-endowed cultural scene, as
well as plentiful public transport and non-stop activities, a city of more
than 8 million souls.
The old city center harbors churches and mansions brimming with colonial
and religious art, including such superb architectural. Colonial Lima also
features many fine churches and convents.
The Nazca Lines (4 hours from Lima by car), an extraordinary legacy
bequeathed by the ancient people of the Nazca culture. The Lines, an
enormous network of lines and drawings of plants and animals that cover an
area of some 350 square km, provide an unforgettable experience for those
who fly over them.
Cusco is the archaeological capital of América. There are daily flights
from Lima which take around an hour. Near Cusco is the Sacred Valley of the
Incas where is laying some of the priceless treasures of Peruvian
archeology: Machu Picchu, Sacsayhuaman, Ollantaytambo and Pisac.
