Re: United Way Supports Anti-Nukes

Hi, y'all.

Below is the reply I received from the United Way. [Bracketed] information

was deleted by me and is available upon request. I will continue to support

the United Way, and I hope you do too, but my concerns have resurfaced.

>From what I understand below, it is the local United Way's option to support

501(c)3 organizations.

Regards,

Jim

Dear Mr. Hoerner,

Thank you for your recent question submitted to United Way of America. As

indicated by the message you received in response, your question and concern

were passed along to your local United Way -- that's us, the United Way of [

], serving [ ].

The United Way of [ ] does not provide any funding to the group

you referenced (WARN). Under our policies, the organization is not eligible

to receive any funds from our United Way. We have limitations on the

organizations eligible to receive funds from us, whether they be designated

by a contributor or made as a general or undesignated gift to us. WARN

would not be eligible in either situation.

Other United Ways have more flexible policies that enable individuals to

designate any non-profit organization. The establishment of such a policy

is exclusively a local decision. However, any funds sent to an organization

like WARN would only come from dollars specifically designated by an

individual. I would be extremely surprised if a United Way permitted part

of the general gifts made to them to be used for an advocacy group with such

a focus (i.e. environmental versus human care issues). Unfortunately,

United Way cannot control any non-profit from encouraging their 'members' to

designate them whether or not United Way permits or endorses such action.

In many situations, United Way will simply not honor the designation and

communicate this fact back to the individual making the designated gift -

and, if necessary, return their gift.

For more details on our policies, procedures, and most importantly, how

United Way is using donations to make a real difference in our community,

please visit our web site at [ ]. You may also contact me

directly if you have further questions.

We need your continued support. If you have not already done so, please

make your contribution today and support our work on behalf of [ ].

With thanks,

[ ]

President

United Way of [ ]
