Yes, plain old steam skin burns sound a lot more realistic as the cause of the reported acute effects on the crew.
But staying true to life would take away a big part of the selling point of the Disney movie..... every year many people (civilians, not navy) are killed by natural gas blasts, but the movie industry evidently considers this to be too mundane to bother with.
Nothing like obscure 40-year-old Soviet nuke submarine mishaps to give viewers a rush.
