The attached announcement is a project of the International Relations Committee 

of the Health Physics Society.  The intent of the program is to provide a forum 

for exchange between radiation safety professionals outside the United States 

who may not be able to afford to attend meetings in the U.S., but who have been 

involved in research or activities that would be of interest to Society members.

 

The guidelines of the program and the contact information are provided in the 

announcement.  Please do NOT respond to this list.

 

If you know of anyone who may be interested in submitting an Abstract under

this program, please forward a copy of the announcement to them.

The International Relations Committee (IRC) of the Health Physics Society 

(United States) is requesting abstracts for a special poster session it is 

sponsoring at the American Radiation Safety Conference and Exposition to be 

held in San Diego, California, on 20 - 24 July 2003. This call is a Committee 

project intending to provide an avenue of communication between health physics 

researchers and practitioners who are citizens of foreign countries and their 

peers in the United States.

 

This is a POSTER session; the submitter is NOT required to attend the 

conference. It is the Committee's intent to sponsor posters to be displayed at 

the annual meeting. Please note that the Committee is NOT sponsoring travel or 

expenses for submitters to attend the conference.

 

The following guidelines should be followed in submitting the Abstracts for

this event. The ABSTRACT DEADLINE is February 5, 2003. The successful 

submitters will need to provide a poster not later than 27 June 2003 for 

posting at the conference.



The following guidelines apply:

 

1) The submitter is a citizen of (and residing in) a country other than the

United States. The work may not have any collaborators or authors from the

United States who would otherwise be qualified to submit the project to the 

Society through a normal submission process.

 

2) The submitter is NOT intending to attend the meeting in person.



3) The subject of the submitted work is directly related to health physics, 

medical physics, radiation biophysics, radiation biology, radiation safety, 

radiation effects, or other discipline or activity directly related to the 

field of radiation science or practice of radiation safety. Note that 

discussion of innovative work practices, regulatory issues in the foreign 

country, unique problems encountered in the practice of radiation safety, 

medical treatment of radiation affected populations, etc., are all valid 

subjects for submittal. The mere use of radiation or  radioactivity in the 

conduct of a project (such as radiotracer studies) does 

NOT qualify it for consideration.

 

4) The abstract must be provided in the English language in an ELECTRONIC 

FORMAT (i.e., MS Word, WordPerfect, ASCII text file, etc.).



5) Submitted abstracts are to follow this example:

 

TITLE.* Presenter 1, Presenter2, Presenter3(1[Presenter 1's full address and

affiliation]; 2[Presenter2's full address and affiliation], etc.)

 

Text (A thorough description of the work. Not less than 150 words nor more

than 2,000 characters. The body of the abstract must be one concise paragraph.).

 

*(If work was supported under government or private grant, or performed as part 

of routine work duties, provide information as to the source of funding or the 

employer.)



The IRC may edit or modify the Abstract for clarity and to ensure that the 

formatting and word and character limits are met.



6) The Abstracts will be reviewed by members of the International Relations

Committee with assistance from other interested Society members. In general,

the criteria of review will be relevance to the practice of radiation

safety, quality of the science or practice, potential level of interest to

meeting attendees, etc. The Committee is particularly interested in

displaying work that is innovative or is exploring aspects of radiation

safety that have not been the subject of extensive research, commercial, or 

regulatory interest in the United States.

 

7) Submittals must be in an ELECTRONIC format.  The PREFERRED method of

submission is by email to:

Alternately, an abstract may be submitted on a 3.5" 

floppy disk or on a CD-ROM by surface mail to:

8) Those persons whose Abstracts are selected for presentation will be expected 

to provide a poster to be displayed at the annual meeting.  The available 

poster area will be approximately 240 cm x 120 cm (8 ft. X 4 ft.). A member of 

the Committee or an interested society member will assist the submitter in the 

preparation of the poster, if desired.  For efficiency, posters should be 

transmitted to the Society in an electronic format. Posters must be prepared in 

the English language. A Powerpoint-type presentation format is acceptable.

 

9) The posters will be displayed in a special section of the Poster Sessions at 

the annual meeting. The International Relations Committee will provide a host 

for each session who will describe the program, who will provide a discussion 

of each poster with interested Society members, and will assist members with 

contact information for the submitter. The Committee will encourage members to 

contact the submitter in order to establish collaborative efforts in the future.

 

10) The individuals preparing posters will receive an acknowledgement of

their participation in the annual meeting.
