Neill hit the most important factor, that being potentially varying backgrounds in the 

work place compared to where the dosimeter is stored when not in the radiation work 

area. This topic was addressed more than a year ago and you can find the thread by 

searching the radsafe archives, looking for background, personnel dosimetry, etc. 

Bob Flood posted an excellent summary of the issue and consequences if not 

implemented properly.
