It's Not Too Late to Strengthen Your Radiation Protection Skills!
Harvard School of Public Health Center for Continuing Professional
Education presents the 2003 offering of one of the leading training
programs...
Occupational and Environmental Radiation Protection
April 28 - May 1, 2003
Boston, MA
Program Directors: Dade W. Moeller, PhD, and Jacob Shapiro, PhD
In the current era of uncertainty, radiation protection professionals can
depend on this well-established program to help meet both new and ongoing
challenges. This dynamic four-day program combines expert lectures with
case studies and interactive sessions to help attendees get a solid grip
on both the technical and administrative aspects of compliance.
The program content has been thoroughly revised to reflect
recent developments. New material in 2003 includes a new session on
Nuclear Terrorism, a new case study, Drinking Water Standards and the
Impact on Yucca Mountain, and a revised optional session on Nuclear
Weapons and Nuclear War. Program directors who serve as leaders in
all facets of the field with more than a century of combined
experience have selected faculty members from industry, government,
academia, and medical institutions to ensure that participants receive
the latest information from experts who have distinguished themselves by
both their technical knowledge and their teaching ability.
OVERVIEW
One of the primary objectives throughout the program will be to provide
guidance on how to meet the regulatory requirements both from a technical
and an administrative sense. An important secondary objective will be to
emphasize how to ensure that, once the primary objective has been met,
any doses received by either the workers or the public are maintained at
a level that is "as low as reasonably achievable." Another
important objective will be to familiarize participants with effective
methods for meeting their information needs, both through the published
literature and by searching the Internet. Interactive sessions will
provide opportunities to discuss "real world" problems through
the use of case studies. These range from the understanding and
application of radiation standards, to coping with mishaps in the
laboratory, and assisting members of the public in understanding complex
radiation protection issues. Other sessions will address specific EPA
standards, NRC and Agreement State regulations, and DOE orders.
WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND
Practical Applications focus on lessons learned through experience
and better prepare you to meet your responsibilities.
Interactive Sessions offer daily opportunities to explore,
clarify, and confirm the basic principles of radiation protection.
Laboratory Demonstrations highlight applications of radiation
instrumentation in solving problems and illustrating basic
principles.
Personal Advice and Guidance will be available from individual
meetings with faculty members as well as interaction with your
peers.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
- health physicists, radiation safety officers, and radiation
protection technicians
- industrial hygienists and other occupational health specialists
