One measure that hasn't been mentioned is that of automobile gas mileage

(kilometerage?). In the US, we measure miles per gallon and look for a

high number. In metric countries, they measure kilometers/100 liters and

look for a low number. This would cause mass confusion among the public,

not to mention the regulators (EPA).

Bill,

My 1958 _Cassell's New German Dictionary_ offers "Meilenlaenge", "Meilenzahl", and "Kilometergeld" as equivalents to the English "mileage". In my 1996 _Duden Deutsches Universal Woerterbuch A-Z_, the "Meilen" derivatives have disappeared from usage and "Kilometergeld" remains.

I think the mileage measure used in Europe is something on the order of liters/100 kilometers, and they do want a small number.
