RE: Bernie's original post raising the "reward" to $2500
If those who put so much effort into decrying the fine print in Cohen's
offer would step back and look at the substantive intent, we'd make better
progress. Cohen was clearly challenging people to find a flaw in his work
that would invalidate his conclusion. This has not been done.
Pushkin speculates that a radon-smoking relationship might do this, but
Cohen has replied many times to that obvious notion. He has shown that no
such relationship can be large enough to change the basic conclusion. What
Cohen specifically asked was that someone postulate a relationship that
would in fact reverse the inverse relationship his data so clearly indicate.
This requires that some numbers be proposed that are within the realm of
reasonable possibility. This has not been done.
I might suggest that if Cohen took into account the phase of the moon, his
conclusions might be disproved. But I would not expect him to pay me for
that off-hand suggestion, with no numerical proof of its magnitude, let
alone its relevance.
