I agree with your assessment--especially regarding the "made up stuff". As
an example, the vet made multiple references towards respiratory illness
suffered by himself and family. He was "sure it was the DU". Fortunately, a
later caller asked him if he was smoker. The answer was "yes" and there was
further speculation that might actually be the cause of his respiratory
problems.
The retired chemistry professor was from Colorado State University. Also,
you were quite diplomatic with respect to the Gulf War Syndrome comments
(for those unaware of the program, the comments were quite unbelievable).
Although you might feel as though you "didn't get anywhere", I'd submit
that a listener who was truly interested would have taken some of the
rationale comments as the impetus for further research...
