Route one to the centre of the Earth (May 14)

David Stevenson, a geophysicist from the California Institute of Technology, has proposed a novel way to study the Earth's core - by violently projecting a communication probe down to it. However, he admits that the energy of the explosion needed to penetrate the Earth would be very high - about 10^15 joules. This is equivalent, he says, to an earthquake of magnitude 7 on the Richter scale or the energy released from a nuclear device. The probe would send back results to the surface via high-frequency seismic waves (D Stevenson 2003 Nature 423 239).
