I remember coming across many papers on radiation induced coronary
artery disease, CAD,
when I was researching radiation therapy for CAD many years ago...
Mind you, the effect was associated with high dose rate radiation.
A quick medline search "radiation coronary stenosis" should yield
several papers (limit the search
to before 1998 or you will have to wade through a plethora of
"radiation therapy for restenosis" papers).
Here are two abstracts:
Clin Cardiol 1992 Jun;15(6):459-61 (ISSN: 0160-9289) Chinnasami BR;
Schwartz RC; Pink SB; Skotnicki RA
Department of Medicine, Polyclinic Medical Center, Harrisburg,
Pennsylvania 17110. This report draws an
association between mediastinal irradiation and isolated left main
coronary artery stenosis. The report highlights
two patients who developed selective left main coronary artery stenosis
post mediastinal treatment. In the animal
model, it has been shown that high serum cholesterol levels at the time
of, or soon after, irradiation are necessary to
initiate arteriosclerotic plaque formation.
Am J Cardiol 1996 Jul 1;78(1):114-5 (ISSN: 0002-9149) Mittal S;
Berko B; Bavaria J; Herrmann HC Cardiovascular
Divisions, Princeton Medical Center, New Jersey, USA. Coronary artery
disease and valvular dysfunction are long-term
complications of mediastinal irradiation. We describe 3 patients who
underwent successful combined coronary artery
bypass grafting and valve replacement for symptoms related to
radiation-induced coronary artery and valvular disease.
