Re: OLD Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Study

June 17

In his book "The War Against the Atom," Samuel McCracken has a brief

discussion of Najarian's study (p. 151).

It appears that the initial story about Najarian's study was printed in

the "Boston Globe" on Feb. 19, 1978; p. 1.

McCracken writes that "some months" after the original story Najarian

testified before a committee chaired by Sen. Edward Kennedy and "conceded

that most of his conclusions had been based on inadequate data and had

proved to exaggeate the facts seriously." According to McCracken, Kennedy

"berated Najarian thoroughly for his irresponsibility."

McCracken (footnote 47, p. 188) refers readers to a study whose author is

Robert A. Rinsky et. al. "Epidemiologic Study of Civilian Employees at the

Portsmouth Naval Shipyard," U.S. Dept. of HHS, Dec. 1980. When McCracken

wrote (ca. 1982) the study had not yet been published, but a summary

discussion is available in Robert A. Rinsky et. al., "Cancer Mortality at a

Naval Nuclear Shipyard," "The Lancet," 8214:231-235; 1981.
