RE: Synergistic Interaction in the Carcinogenesis due to radon and smoking

Hi all,

Sometimes it is better to do a literature search before

sounding off! Well, sometimes the literature coverage of

the search engines is a bit late in starting with their

coverage. So, let us leave it at that.

Be that as it may, there are two papers in the literature

that are not so ancient and that do consider a 'multiplicative'

synergism in the interaction of radon and smoking in lung

carcinogenesis:

	The original work is by:

Whittemore, A.S., and A. McMillan. "Lung Cancer Mortality

among U.S. Uranium Miners: A reappraisal." J. Natl. Cancer

Inst. 71, 489-499 (1983).

Later, I used their data to check my theoretical approach

and thereby confirmed the result of their analysis:

F.A. Seiler, "Analysis of Health or Systemic Effects

Caused by Two Toxicants," Environment International, 13,

459-467, 1987.

I don't remember off the top of my head which models

Whittemore and McMillan used but I know that I tried all

kinds of synergistic, independent, and antagonistic models,

52 in all, and out on top came Whittemore's solution.

So I have already criticized the recent work of Jerry

Puskin for not considering that the mechanism of interaction

is known, so that the character of the 'confounder' is well

specified and should not be ignored.

HAVE A NICE WEEKEND ALL!

Fritz
