RE: ozone creation

Peter,

With respect to ozone production:

According to "Associated Radiological and Non-Radiological Hazards from

Accelerator Operations" by Carter B. Ficklen in Health Physics of

Radiation-Generating Machines (Proceedings of the HPS Midyear Meeting 1997),

W.P. Swanson in "Radiological safety aspects of the operation of electron

linear accelerators," IAEA TR No. 188, 1989 gives an overview of ozone

production.

In NCRP Report 49, on page 35 it states, " Ozone production is negligible

during x-ray or gamma-ray beam therapy. However, some megavoltage equipment

also permits electron beam therapy which may result in significant ozone

production, and consideration should be given to this possible hazard (see

NCRP Report No. 51)." Appendix I of NCRP 51 is dedicated to "Ozone and other

Noxious Gases."

I thought that Wade and Patterson's book "Accelerator Health Physics" might

have useful information, but I did not find it.

Enjoy,
