Position Announcement for Radiation Safety Specialist at The Universityof Tennessee, Knoxville



The University of Tennessee is seeking a Radiation Safety Specialist (Coordinator II) for the Office of Radiation Safety.  The Radiation Safety Specialist is expected to support the Radiation Safety Officer in all aspects of its responsibilities and commitments.  The primary responsibilities of the Radiation Safety Specialist are:



* Conduct training programs for all users of radioactive materials as required to assure compliance with regulations and as necessary to assure all users are knowledgeable in the use of these materials

* Inspect and survey all packages of radioactive materials designated for use under all University of Tennessee licenses

* Supervise staff who assist in accomplishing all RSO functions

* Verify that all laboratories are properly equipped with radiation monitoring equipment

* Conduct periodic surveys of all laboratories that use dispersible radioactive materials

* Assist Principal Investigators in development of protocols for research and for radioactive waster minimization, and

* Perform calibrations of all radiation monitoring equipment

 

The initial responsibility of the Radiation Safety Specialist will be to assure that the training program is properly implemented.  Subsequently, responsibilities of the Radiation Safety Specialist will include items cited above, as well as those assigned by the Radiation Safety Officer.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree in Health Physics or related field, OR equivalent work-related experience is required.  Good oral and written communication skills also required.  Applicant must be able to articulate training requirements for all levels of authorized users of radiation.  Professional experience in training and in radiation safety programs at universities, national laboratories, or industry desired.
