RE: MDA vs. Critical level for DOE Free Release surveys ( Conclusion!!!!)

Based on all the feedback I got from RADSAFE this appears to be the proper

use of MDA and decision levels for free release contamination surveys.

1)	Determine the appropriate limit for the release (e.g. 100

dpm/100cm^2 for TRU alpha)

2)	Define a survey protocol/methodology (i.e. instrument efficiency,

background, count/scan rate) which yields an MDA less than the limit.

(Surveying with this methodology provides a 95% confidence that an

contamination at or greater than the limit will be detected)

3)	Once the survey is complete, review the survey data against the DL.

(Values greater than the DL indicate that activity is present which may

require some further investigation.)

Thanks for everyone's participation
