Re: Dirty Bomb

Whole body irradiation above 120 mGy (12 Rad) causes abrupt decreases in sperm count. A transient azoospermia will appear and resulting sterility may last several months to several years... Armed Forces... Medical Management.. Handbook.

When I have instructed first responders, I have said it is important to have a personal limit based on deterministic as well as stochastic; such as this 12 Rad or 25 Rem (EPA). Of course, the deterministic effect above varies among individuals, localized exposure, equivanence, etc but is a realistic limit and may justify sending someone outside of reproductive years instead of a young first responder. Use Time Dist Shielding if it's over 120 mGy, I say.

Doses recieved in a few minutes this high will not be likely in a dirty bomb senerio anyway.

I believe that the EPA says first responders are "allowed" to receive doses

of up to 25 rem [lifesaving] for one incident, not that they should "expect"

them.

The problem with the above statement from the aspect of the First Responder is that even with the plethora of data on the above concept no one really understands (among responders that is) how 25 rem will affect them.

Also is that not an NRC standard rather then EPA? I thought EPA and OSHA mirrored the NRC Standard in respect to RAD?
