--The important radiation effect from coal burning is the radon
released from the unburned materials from coal use. As shown in my
paper "The role of radon in comparisons of effects of radioactivity
releases from nuclear power, coal burning, and phosphate mining", Health
Physics 40:19ff;1981, the deaths caused by this radon (assuming LNT) is
about 30/MWe-yr from coal burning, which is 1000 times larger than the
number caused by nuclear power.
