Air Eligibility Marking Now Optional
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has published Addendum
No. 2 to the Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous
Goods by Air which changes the mandatory requirement for use of the "air
eligibility" mark to have become effective January 1, 2004 to optional.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) will published
(supposedly by Friday, December 19, 2003) an amendment to their Dangerous
Goods Regulations changing the requirement for mandatory use of the "air
eligibility" mark to have become effective January 1, 2004 to optional.
The US DOT Hazardous Material Regulations 49 CFR 172.321 currently permits
the use of the "air eligibility" mark with an October 1, 2004 mandatory
effective date. It is anticipated that the US DOT will "harmonize" with the
ICAO change before October 1, 2004 and change the regulation to optional
use.
