radiography event
This event is from the January 29, 2004, NRC Daily Event Report. It is
one a two radiography overexposures reported on this date.
One question: 10 CFR 34.47, and, I assume, comparable state
regulations, require a radiographer to wear a direct reading dosimeter
and an alarm ratemeter, in addition to NVLAP accredited dosimetry, in
this case, the film badge. Properly used, these would have shown that
the radiographer was approaching the 5 rem limit. It's thus difficult
to understand how the radiographer, and his employer, were not aware of
the overexposure until the film badge was processed.
In the other event, the report at least mentions that the radiographer,
who entered the radiography area without retracting the source, was
wearing the proper dosimetry, but, apparently did not hear the alarm and
did not notice that his direct reading dosimeter was off scale.
My usual question: When's the NRC going to take radiography seriously?
I hope, before someone is killed.
The opinions expressed are strictly mine.
It's not about dose, it's about trust.
Curies forever.

RADIOGRAPHER EXCEEDED ANNUAL RADIATION DOSE LIMIT
When film badge dosimetry for December 2003 was processed, it was
determined that a radiographer, employed by an inspection firm in Utah
but working in Colorado, received an annual radiation dose of 5.035 Rem
for the year ending 12/31/03. The radiographer claimed, however, that
his film badge had fell on the ground during radiography such that the
dose was not actually received. No additional information has been
provided at this time.
