I think we went aroung this discussion before.

Besides radiation, thermal energy can cause burns and

kill people.

Unfortunatley there is a lot of experience accumulated in research after the

Chernobyl accident.



Most of the persons killed were firefighters who were subject to deposition

of fission products like Sr-90/Y-90. The gamma-ray component would have been

very bad, but the so-called beta-burns from beta-emitters like Sr-90 were

deadly.



One should think of other aspects than dosimetric ones: Those people killed

by the radiation were fire-fighters, who were paid for intervening. I

seriously hope that no such sacrifices will be necessary in the future.
