The Detective, by Ortec
A colleague asked me to post this question from his first responder
customers. If anyone has used this instrument or has additional
information about it please respond to Kevin Hungate at keh@inel.gov
thanks!

Subject: The Detective, by Ortec
Greetings all!
I had not heard of this instrument so I went to Ortec's web site and
researched it. What I found is what appears to be an excellent
instrument for nuclide identification. This instrument has the
capability of identifying isotopes to a much greater depth of
fidelity than the Field Spec instrument that the CSTs use. The reason
is it uses a cooled High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detector vs. the
Sodium Iodide detector used on most field-use isotope identifier
instruments. HPGe detectors are part of the equipment employed by RAP
teams. I can send a query out on RadSafe to see if anyone has used it
and can provide perspective. My initial feel is that it has potential
to be a very useful tool for differentiating the illicit from legal
radioactive materials. The only draw back I see is the weight. At 23
lbs, it wouldn't be something you'd want to pack around for a long
time. I'll let you know if I find more information.
Thanks

Hello Stephanie,
Good to hear from you! I look forward to seeing you again at the end
of the month out in California.
I have not heard of "The Detective" by Ortec but Kevin Hungate (our
rad expert) may have some information on it.
Kevin Hungate, can you please respond to Kevin Fetterman and cc CPT
Stephanie Wilson concerning the instrument listed in the note below?

Kevin -
One of our first-responders is looking at a new piece of radiation
detection equipment, it is listed in the email below. I don't know if
you or anyone at INEEL has information about this detector, but if
you do, please send it to Kevin Fetterman. He is CCed on this email.
Thanks,

Subject: Equipment Survey
While researching possible new WMD/Hazmat equipment, I came upon a
new device called " The Detective" by Ortec. This Detector is a
radiological/nuclear monitor that is able to classify sources as
either industrial, medical, natural, or nuclear. It then is able to
specifically identify the source of / but not limited to 25 different
radionuclides. If anybody has any information on this device or could
pass this email onto someone who might, that would be greatly
appreciated.
Respectfully,
Kevin Fetterman
