Leader in radiation monitoring dies

Wednesday, February 18, 2004

>From staff and wire reports

Robert S. Landauer Jr., founder of Glenwood-based Landauer Inc., a leader in

services and products for monitoring radiation exposure, died Monday in

Sarasota, Fla. He was 79.

"Mr. Landauer had been ill for some time but we are nonetheless saddened by

his passing. Many Landauer employees recall Bob's kind and supportive

management style," Landauer president and CEO Brent Latta said in a

statement.

Mr. Landauer started R.S. Landauer Jr. and Co., predecessor to Landauer

Inc., in 1954. His interest in radiation monitoring was inspired by his

father's work in medical X-ray therapy. After serving in World War II and

receiving a degree from the University of Chicago, Mr. Landauer started the

company with a modest investment.

The company merged with Tech/Ops Inc. in 1968 and Mr. Landauer's management

role expanded to divisional president. In 1988 Tech/Ops spun off Landauer

Inc. as a separately traded public company and Mr. Landauer retired the next

year.

"It is truly an extraordinary achievement to start a business at home that

today has a market capitalization in excess of $375 million and is traded on

the New York Stock Exchange," Latta said.

"The company's leadership is the result of superior technical competence,

advanced data management and results-oriented customer commitment - all

traits that Bob Landauer fostered almost 50 years ago."

Landauer Inc. employs 300 people. The company sells its products and

services worldwide to customers such as hospitals, medical offices, dental

offices and research laboratories that use radiation.

Funeral services for Mr. Landauer are pending.
