Radon in Finland: concentrations in buildings highest in the world
NUCLEAR NEWS FLASHES - Friday, February 20, 2004
INTERNATIONAL:
--MUCH MORE RADON MEASURING MUST BE DONE IN FINLAND, RADIATION protection
officials said, to help stop lung cancer caused by the gas.
The Finnish Radiation & Nuclear Safety Authority said Feb. 19 it is
concerned that only
10,000 of an estimated 70,000 homes with unacceptable radon levels have been
identified to date. Radon in existing homes should not exceed 400 becquerels
per cubic meter under Finnish law. Because homes in Finland are tightly
insulated and often built on bedrock, the Nordic country has the highest
concentrations in the world of radon in buildings.
