This is a very interesting article but the expression, "stays radioactive for 

thousands of years" is misleading.  It is true of course but what is not 

pointed out is that the radionuclides that generate high radiation are mostly gone 

after about 300 years and then the long lived transuranics are all that is 

left and they are not going to harm anyone or anything unless they escape from 

the fuel element.
