Savannah Morning News

The word "radioactivity" makes people panic.

And that's not the intent of Arjun Makhijani, a nuclear engineer who authored a report released last week about threats to the Savannah River from the Savannah River Site nuclear weapons plant.

"It's very important to say the good news up front," he said. "I'm not here to panic people."

So Makhijani is quick to point out that Savannah river water is well within current drinking water standards for tritium, a radioactive form of hydrogen produced on the site.

But the Berkeley-trained nuclear engineer does have serious concerns about the 310-square-mile site near Augusta, including the way high-level waste is being treated there. The waste is left over from the production of plutonium and tritium for nuclear weapons during the Cold War.
